I couldn’t help but keep shooting mystified glances at Zach as muffled shrieks were heard from down the hall. “What do you think he’s doing?” I hissed.
“Uh, well, I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet he’s spanking her,” he replied, mildly amused.
I glared at him and the smile he was trying to hide. “I don’t see what’s so funny, Zachary! That’s my sister in there!”
“I’d say she deserves it,” he said after he’d recovered from the use of his full name. “After
what she said to you, how can you defend her, Beth? You’re a good woman,” Zach said wistfully, in a way that I knew meant that while he valued it, he regretted it at the same time.
“Yeah, well,” I shot him a tense smile, “I’d have to be, to be marrying you. You don’t deserve any less.”
I was just starting to melt against him when I heard a loud crack followed by the sound of my sister’s pitiful cry. “I’m going back there,” I announced, jumping to my feet.
