Happy New Year everyone! I've been off the blog hop scene for nearly a month now, and it is SO good to be back! Hope all of you are well! When I think about winter, I think about snow and hot chocolate and building snowmen. I began looking back through some of the things I wrote in high school and came across this poem which I decided to share with you all. No spankings, though! Would have killed my Creative Writing teacher! It is a bit rusty but I left it as is. When I read it I remember exactly what it felt like to be a kid on a snow day!

Gingerbread Houses

Noses press against cold, frosted glass
as we eagerly watch snowflakes fall from heaven .
No two angels are exactly alike.
Our winter wonderland possesses a beauty
never seen before.
It seems wrong to mar it, this white paradise,
but it’s a gift, and we’re going to enjoy it.
So feet pitter-patter out the door
where we simultaneously say hello and goodbye
to this perfection.
The clock is ticking on our day of rhapsody
and we shoot out the door like horses.
I can feel your hands on my shoulders,
pulling me to the snow, helping me make an angel.
When your back is turned I make a snowball
and launch it at your face as you turn.
Like a tiger, you’re ready to pounce,
and I jump up to begin the game of “catch me if you can”
that lasts for what seems like hours.
Finally, we are too numb for laughter
and go inside for fresh-from-the-oven gingerbread
and hot cocoa,
and I know that this day was made just for us.

Enjoy the rest of Cold Hands Warm Bottoms!!

I love all your books. I live in Florida but remember the snow in NY and snowball fights, snow forts and of course snowmen. I loved when it was so snowy that school was canceled, a free day.

I wasn't as comfortable with that part of my life when I was in high school, Patty! In fact, don't think I realized it existed!!

Your poem was great. Boy this sure took my back to my childhood. I remember that I hated to step in pristine snow because I was afraid I would hurt it. Thanks for reminding me of a great and silly memory.

Aw, that was just so sweet. It made my day. Whenever we get snow it's just like that, the child in us creeps out of the closet and we pelt snowballs and work on a snowman until our fingers burn with the cold. Sadly it's rarely deep enough for a snow angel, so I haven't made a decent one in years and usually all too soon the white sparkle turns to brown mush.

Yeah, my dad used to make snow cream which tasted good, but when the last of the snow was about to melt away it didn't look so great by then! Thanks for reading, Tara!

Loved the poem. Brought back memories of snowy days of childhood before responsibilities and life happened. I remember the feeling of looking out the window after a snowfall and wanting to play but also not wanting to mess it up. It is so quiet and peaceful when if first falls. Thanks

Cathy, I have been writing since first grade, actually. It was my teacher's idea to keep my quiet (yes, a loud mouth even back then) while the class worked. I have never stopped. I feel so fortunate I do it full time now!

I loved your poem. I thought I would write a poem I wrote when I was
8 years old.
I met a little turkey, his name was gobble goo
I asked him in for breakfast, he ended up in stew
One day he came to haunt me, but I knew what to do,
I took a great big hatchet, there's no more gobble goo
